Y'know, it would be easy to look ahead to tomorrow night's rematch against the Detroit Pistons, and discount tonight's contest as another easy win for the men in Green.
After all, the Grizzlies have a 9-22 record, they've lost five of their last six ... Hell, even the announcers during the pregame show wanted to talk about the Pistons instead!
However, so far this season, we haven't had to worry about the Celtics themselves looking past an opponent. Nope, they've had plenty of opportunities thus far to take a sub-par team for granted, but it's not happening ... Their focus and intensity have yet to waver, no matter how many losses the other team has piled up.
As Ray Allen himself has said, "Every game is a challenge" ... Now, let's just make sure that continues tonight, boys!
FIRST QUARTER
Perkins wins the opening tip against Gasol and gets the ball to Pierce, who drives to the basket before kicking it out to Garnett; he takes the open 18-foot jumper, and it bounces around a couple of times before falling through the net (2-0 11:43).
Milicic then misses the shot, and Pierce gets the rebound. He takes it upcourt himself, then passes to KG; he gets the ball inside to Perk, and he immediately passes back out to Pierce behind the three-point line. His shot misses, though, and Darko beats Garnett to the rebound. He gives the ball to Miller, who takes it back the other way, where he pulls up and nails the little 12-footer (2-2 10:51).
At the other end, Allen misses the fallaway jumpshot over Miller, and Darko gets himself another rebound. He passes upcourt to Conley, who finds Gay spotting up in the corner. His shot is wide of the mark, but Gasol grabs the offensive board and passes back out to Rudy; he drives down the lane and tries the floater, but that too misses and Rondo comes away with the rebound. He goes coast to coast and takes it all the way in for the layup (4-2 10:09).
Miller scores again, then Rondo is called for the offensive foul running into Mike; the Grizz regain possession, but Gay shoots up an airball (ha HA!) and Garnett takes down the board. He gets the ball up to Rajon, and he passes inside to Allen, however he has his layup attempt blocked by Darko out of bounds.
Boston retains possession, and Rondo tries the little floater in the lane, but that misses and Milicic controls the rebound (his third already). He passes to Gay who begins the fast break, then finds Conley in the corner for the 18-foot jumpshot; that's no good, but Rudy is in perfect position to grab the miss and score on the putback slam (4-6 8:43).
At the other end, Perkins tries to go in and dunk the ball himself, but Darko gets a piece of that (wow) and Gay comes up with the loose ball. He passes to Conley, who makes his way back up the floor, then gives the ball back to Rudy; he misses the shot, however, and Rondo collects the rebound. He dribbles the length of the court and takes it in for the layup attempt, but Darko winds up with yet another block!
The ball goes out of bounds, so it's still Celtics' possession, and KG is fouled by Gasol taking it to the basket. So, he steps to the line and makes one-of-two free throws (5-6 8:03). Pau then buries the 15-footer (with Perkins right in his face), but Garnett answers with the turnaround "jay" over Darko (7-8 7:31).
Gasol then misses the outside shot (Memphis is now shooting 4-for-11 from the field), but Pierce fouls Milicic going for the rebound; the Grizzlies retain possession, and Darko tries to lob the pass inside to Pau, but Perk gets a hand on it and Allen controls the loose ball. He takes it back the other way, and finds KG for the turnaround jumpshot over Darko; that comes up short (Boston is 3-for-10 shooting) and Gasol tears down the rebound.
The Grizz have another chance to take the lead, as Gay throws a bullet pass inside to Milicic, but his layup attempt is blocked by Garnett (yeah!). Gasol comes up with the loose ball, although he proceeds to blow the layup (!) ... That shot actually missed the rim completely, even though Pau was standing right underneath the basket (I think it was one of those cases where you wanna shoot the ball before it's even in your hands).
Anyway, Pierce has the "rebound" and passes up to Rondo, who finds Allen open behind the three-point line; that shot is no good, however, and Gay secures the rebound. He gives the ball to Miller, who takes it back the other way, then decides to launch a three-pointer himself (from two feet behind the line and with Rajon right in his face) but hits it anyway (7-11 6:09)!
It's still a four-point game with 3:30 left in the quarter, when Pierce takes it strong to the hoop, but has his layup attempt blocked by Darko out of bounds (this guy is everywhere!); Boston retains possession, however, and Paul knocks down the turnaround jumper over Gay (13-15 3:17).
Rudy answers with a bucket, then Ray tries for the outside shot, but Milicic goes up and gets a piece of it (are you friggin' kidding me?!?) ... Luckily, KG comes up with the loose ball standing right underneath the basket, so he goes up and scores the layup while being fouled by Gasol (whew!). He makes the free throw to complete the three-point play (16-17 2:31) and to give himself ten points on the night already.
Allan Tony comes into the game at this point (replacing the other Allen) ... and immediately gets beat off the dribble by Conley, who scores on the floater in the lane (16-19 2:17); d'oh!
At the other end, Pierce winds up being covered by Darko while standing behind the three-point line; he fakes a shot to get the big man up in the air, then takes it all the way to the basket but misses the layup attempt (!) and Conley winds up with the loose rebound. He takes it upcourt before passing to Gasol, and he misses the short pullup jumpshot.
Pierce gets the rebound, as the Celts have a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer ... However, they don't even get the opportunity, as Paul tries to make the pass to Tony at halfcourt, but Gay picks it off and sends the ball over to Conley, and he buries the 15-footer (16-21 1:36).
Pierce tries to redeem himself with a three-pointer that wakes up the crowd, then Darko goes for the hook shot over Perkins but comes up short. Paul gets the rebound and takes it back up the floor, then passes to Rondo; he blows right past Conley and goes in for the layup attempt, but it spins around the rim and Kendrick tries to help it along by poking it into the hoop ... That's a big no-no, as the refs whistle him for offensive goaltending (darnit).
Memphis regains possession, as Hugh Laurie is on the floor with 45.1 seconds remaining (replacing Rajon), while Miller buries the outside shot (19-23 :31) ... he has been red hot (9 PTS, 4-4 FG)!
Tony answers with a three-pointer, but that gives the Grizz time to hold for the final shot; after dribbling a few seconds off the clock, Conley drives to the basket and House grabs him, knowing that Boston has a foul to give ... However, the refs say he was in the act of shooting (no way, his feet were firmly planted on the ground!), so Mike steps to the line and makes one-of-two free throws (22-24 :04.2).
Rondo can't score at buzzer, as the score remains 22 to 24 (Memphis) at the end of one.
SECOND QUARTER
Miller blows right past Tony and scores on the layup to open the quarter, while at the other end Pierce hits the fallaway jumper over Casey Jacobsen Robbers (24-26 11:23). Miller then frontrims the jumpshot (his first miss) and Parker Posey collects the rebound; he takes it upcourt himself, then passes inside to Allen who finishes with the layup (26-all 10:28).
Jacobsen follows that up with an airball (ha HA!), but House fouls Miller going for the rebound; that's his second, as Memphis retains possession and Stromile Swift Boat Veterans for Truth tries to score over Scotty 2 Hotty but comes up short. Tony grabs the rebound and passes to House; he takes it upcourt, then passes back to Allen, who takes the pick from Pollard (eliminating Miller from the equation) and knocks down the short jumper to put Boston back ahead (28-26 9:52).
Memphis calls for a 20-second timeout, and when play resumes Speedy and the Green Navarro knocks down the outside shot to tie the score ... Pierce follows that up by losing the ball out of bounds, as the Grizzles regain possession; Kyle "XY" Lowry misses the three-point attempt, but Swift tips the loose rebound out to Navarro. He gets the ball right back inside to Stromile, where he's fouled by Pollard going for the dunk. That puts him at the line, and he makes both free throws (28-30 8:48).
Glen "Macrosomia" Davis comes into the game for Pierce, while Ray is also back on the floor in place of Pollard (Glenn Rivers M.D. going for the small lineup right now) ... Meanwhile, another basket by Tony ties the score at 30 apiece. Swift then misses the shot and Posey grabs the rebound; he passes upcourt to House, who finds Tony spotting up in the corner. He can't find the bottom of the net, however, as Jacobsen grabs the rebound and gets the ball to Navarro; he heads back the other way, and dishes it to Gay for the short jumper (30-32 7:49).
A layup by "Big Baby" ties the score yet again with seven minutes left in the half, then Swift backrims the jumpshot, but Jacobsen comes up with the offensive rebound. He passes out to Gay, who finds Navarro and he tries to dribble his way to the basket; Tony strips him of the ball (that's only Memphis' second turnover), and gets it to Ray at the other end of the floor.
He finds House wide-open in the corner, but he misses the jumpshot and Gay takes down the rebound. That gives Memphis another opportunity to retake the lead ... and that's just what happens, as Navarro drains the three-pointer (34-37 6:12)!
Tony then misses the outside shot, but Davis tips the loosee rebound out to Posey; he gives the ball back to Allen, and he passes to the other Allen (by which I mean Ray) in the corner, where he's fouled by Navarro at the 5:27 mark ... When play resumes, Garnett is back in the game (replacing "Big Baby"), while Tony works the baseline and takes it in against two defenders for the layup (36-37 5:20)!
Darko tries to put his team back ahead, but misses the shot and KG controls the rebound. He passes to Ray, who takes it upcourt himself, then finds Tony behind the three-point line and he buries it (39-37 4:49); wow, that's 16 points for Allen (6-8 FG) in 10 minutes!
Gasol then misses, as Milicic tries to save the loose rebound, but the ball ends up in Posey's hands as the Celts find themselves in a 3-on-1 fast break ... Ray is in the middle, with James and Tony on either side and just Lowry to beat. He passes to Posey (I guess he figured Tony's done enough scoring for now) and Lowry whacks him across the arms, so that puts him at the line where he makes both free throws (41-37 4:29).
A basket by Darko with four minutes left gets Memphis back within two, but Tony comes right back and scores over Gay (43-39 3:43)! That's Allen's season high already!
Perk and Pierce come back on the floor at the 3:14 mark (Rondo and Posey take a seat), while Milicic is left open and buries the outside jumper (43-41 2:55). Tony then tries to back down Gay, but instead passes inside to Garnett, who quickly gets the ball to Kendrick and he finishes with the two-hand slam (45-41 2:35); the Celts are now shooting 9-for-14 in the quarter, while the Grizz are 6-for-18!
Gay and Pierce trade baskets, then Ray picks off a bad pass by Darko and takes it right at Rudy for the layup attempt ... Unfortunately, Rudy comes up with the block, and the ball goes off Allen's knee and out of bounds!
That gives Memphis possession with 23.3 seconds remaining, so they're able to hold for the final shot ... Miller takes his time trying to work his way around Tony, but is finally able to throw up an alleyoop to Gay for the two-hand jam (47-45 :05.7).
Rondo then loses the ball out of bounds with three seconds on the clock (!), and Gay ALMOST gets the halfcourt shot at the buzzer ... Luckily, it doesn't connect, and the Celts are able to maintain their lead (47-45) at the half, thanks in large part to the contributions of one Tony Allen (18 PTS, 7-9 FG).
THIRD QUARTER
The crowd is loud to open the second half, as Miller is called for the offensive foul setting a screen on Perk (what is he, crazy?) ... Boston regains possession, however Darko blocks Pierce's layup attempt (here we go again) and Gay collects the loose ball. He heads back the other way, then passes to Gasol, who tries for the hook shot over KG but is wide of the mark (he's just 1-for-9 shooting in the game).
Rondo grabs the rebound of that miss, and dribbles the length of the floor before taking it to the basket for the layup attempt ... Unfortunately, Gasol rejects that shot (!), but Conley tries to save the loose ball from going out of bounds and sends it right to Pierce standing at the free-throw line. Paul (never one to look a gift horse in the mouth) pulls up and buries the jumper (49-45 11:07).
Darko answers with the one-hand slam, then Garnett misses the pullup jumpshot over Conley, and Gasol controls the rebound. He gets the ball to Conley, who takes it upcourt, then passes back to the trailer Pau and (since it worked so well for Pierce the last time) he pulls up from the free-throw line and knocks down the shot (49-all 10:12).
Paul scores to put Boston back ahead, then Conley bricks the three-point attempt and Perkins comes down with the miss. He passes to Rajon, who quickly takes it up the floor, then finds KG at the top of the key. He uses the pumpfake to get Gay in the air, as Milicic comes over to try and help ... but that just leaves Perk wide open under the basket for the strong two-hand jam (53-49 9:10).
Another basket by Pierce extends the lead to six with seven minutes left in the quarter, while at the other end Darko frontrims the jumpshot, and Perk tears away the rebound (his fifth). He gets the ball upcourt to Rondo, and he swings it around to Ray along the baseline; he looks for an opening, but instead spies Kendrick making his way up the floor, so throws the ball inside and the big man finishes with the hook shot over Darko (61-53 6:12).
Milicic then goes for another jumpshot, but this time shoots up an airball (ha HA!) and Rajon comes away with the loose rebound. He makes a fullcourt pass to Garnett, and Milicic is forced to grab him; that puts Kevin at the line, and he makes both foul shots (63-53 5:42).
The Grizz are fading fast, as Gay misses, and Perk gets himself another rebound. He passes to Rondo, who takes it back the other way, then finds Ray at the top of the key. He lobs the ball inside to KG (where he has Rudy covering him), so he has no problem scoring over the smaller man with the 12-footer (65-53 5:19) ... The Celts have hit a nice offensive groove right now, as they're shooting 67 percent (8-12 FG) in the quarter.
Memphis has to call for time, but when play resumes Conley winds up getting his layup attempt blocked by Perkins (the Grizz are just 3-for-10 shooting in the quarter); Pierce controls the loose ball, then gets it upcourt to Rondo, who passes to Ray making his way to the basket ... Unfortunately, he mishandles the pass and loses the ball out of bounds. That gives Memphis back possession, and Miller makes a nice pass inside to Gay, where he scores on the hook shot over Perk (65-55 4:33).
Not to be outdone, Pierce makes a strong move down the lane, and is able to draw the foul on Miller while scoring the layup (nice); he adds the free throw to complete thre three-point play (68-55 3:57).
Jacobsen answers with a three-pointer, then Paul gets bumped off the shot by Miller (Heinsohn: "Holy mackerel, what is that?!?") and is forced to pass the ball to Rajon; he takes the short jumper, but that misses and Miller grabs the rebound ... Memphis has a chance to inch their way closer, and Gay pulls up over KG and buries it (68-60 3:15).
If that wasn't enough, Rudy then steals a bad pass by KG (meant for Rajon), as the Grizzlies have a chance to get within six or better ... Gasol takes it down the lane for the layup attempt; that rims out, but he gets his own rebound and is fouled by Garnett, so he steps to the line and makes one-of-two free throws (68-61 2:41).
Tony comes back into the game at this point for Ray, while Rondo takes it right into Gasol's chest as he makes his way to the basket for the layup attempt; however, that misses, and Miller collects the rebound. He makes the outlet pass to Gay, who tries to slice his way in between Tony and Posey, but ends up losing the floor.
After coughing up the ball, Rudy crumples to the floor in a heap (I think someone poked him in the facial area), as Allen picks it up and heads back the other way. He passes to Rondo, who finds KG underneath the basket, and he's grabbed by Gasol to prevent the easy basket ... Meanwhile, Gay is still on the ground, and when he finally gets up he's bleeding from the mouth (replays show that Tony's hand came up unintentionally and caught Rudy in the face, which actually chipped one of his teeth!) so he heads to the bench as Swift comes in to replace him.
Anyway, back to the Garnett-Gasol tie-up ... It's a non-shooting foul, so Tony inbounds to Rondo, and he finds Pierce at the free-throw line. He kicks it back out to Allen, but he misses the outside shot and Miller grabs the rebound (his seventh). He passes to Conley, who takes it back the other way and tries to get the ball inside to Jacobsen; luckily, KG slaps that away and Tony comes away with the loose ball. He makes a fullcourt pass to Rondo, and he tries to go in for the layup, but Miller steps in and draws the offensive foul call (which draws another "Holy mackerel" outta Heinsohn)!
Sloppy play all around, as Miller tries to make the pass inside to Gasol, but it goes over his head and out of bounds ... but the refs bail him out as they say Posey was the last to touch it (which is complete and utter bull)! The crowd - and Tommy - voice their displeasure, but the fact remains that Memphis gets the ball back; Gasol can't do anything with it, though, as he misses the turnaround jumpshot over KG (the Grizzlies are 6-for-16 shooting in the quarter) and Posey grabs the rebound.
We head back the other way, as Posey fakes a three-point shot, but instead passes inside to Garnett. He goes in for the finger-roll over Jacobsen; score the bucket, plus the refs call the foul on Casey (maybe that will satiate Mister Heinsohn) ... One free throw by KG later, and the Celts have a double-digit lead again (71-61 :54.5).
Swift answers with a layup, but Posey comes right back and knocks down a three-pointer (74-63 :30.9); Boston is now 11-for-19 shooting in the quarter!
Lowry then tries to drive down the lane, and knocks down Rondo ... but the refs call the foul on Rajon (which nearly has Tommy speaking in tongues at this point)! That puts Kyle at the line, and he makes both free throws (74-65 :11.8).
Tony misses at the buzzer, and the score remains 74 to 65 (Celtics) entering the final stanza ...
FOURTH QUARTER
Pierce, Davis, Posey, House, and Tony Allen are in to start the fourth ... Meanwhile, Paul misses a three-point attempt, but "Big Baby" grabs the offensive board and goes back up for the shot; Gasol blocks it (geez), however Davis recovers the loose ball between three Memphis players and kicks it out to Pierce.
The crowd applauds the rookie's effort, as Pierce tries to work his way around Jacobsen, but instead passes to Tony making his way down the lane; he goes in for the layup, but Pau bothers the shot (!) and Jacobsen grabs the rebound. He passes up the floor to Lowry, and he finds Navarro for the little runner in the lane (74-67 11:08); Heinsohn: "You know who [Navarro] looks like? The guy that delivers your pizza, he's like a pizza delivery kid!"
House and Miller trade three-point baskets, then Tony makes the nice pass inside to Pierce, but his layup attempt is blocked by Gasol! Jacobsen gets the loose ball and sends it up ahead to Lowry, where he tries to score over Tony but comes up short ... House collects the rebound, as we head back the other way, then gets it to Pierce. He passes inside to "Big Baby", and he's fouled by Navarro (Heinsohn: "Big Baby stepped on the pizza delivery boy!"); that earns him a trip to the charity stripe, where he makes one-of-two free throws (78-70 9:52).
Jacobsen then misses the three-point attempt, and Posey takes down the rebound. He gives the ball to House, and he makes his way up the floor, before passing back to James; he pulls up for the shot but misses, and Davis dives to the floor trying to take the rebound away from Miller (Heinsohn: "TOMMY POINT!"). Mike ends up on the floor, so he literally has to roll the ball over to Lowry, and again "Big Baby" makes a diving play to get it (Heinsohn: "TWO TOMMY POINTS!!! There's a dent in the floor now!") ... Lowry is able to get the ball - even though he has to jump in the air to avoid Davis' girth - and passes up to Navarro, who is wide open for the three-pointer (78-73 9:06).
Tony answers with the acrobatic layup (he just threw it in behind his head to avoid Darko), then Miller misses the three-point attempt (Memphis is now 6-for-20 from behind the line) and House grabs the rebound. He brings the ball upcourt, then finds Pierce, who pulls up over Navarro and buries it (82-73 8:19).
Lowry then scores, but House follows that up with a three-pointer to get Boston's lead back into double digits (85-75 7:15) ... At the other end, Miller misses the outside shot, and Posey controls the rebound. He gets it to House, who takes it up the floor, then suddenly pulls up and drains the 18-footer (87-75 6:51).
Gay (who's back on the floor toughing it out with a fractured tooth) then gets the ball inside to Navarro, but he comes up short on the layup attempt and Posey comes away with the rebound. He passes to House, who dribbles upcourt, then finds Ray behind the three-point line. Davis sets a pick on Miller to free up some space for him, but he instead makes the crosscourt pass to Tony, who slices down the lane (which draws in Gasol) and dishes to Posey for the easy layup (89-75 5:58)!
Nice ball movement there, as it might be time for the Grizz to kiss this game goodbye ... However, Gay scores with the turnaround jumper over Tony, and assistant coach Tom Thibodeau Through the Tulips earns himself a technical foul off the bench for arguing that they should've called a three-second violation on Rudy; however, Miller misses the free throw (ha HA!), as Boston has possession, and House makes the no-look pass inside to "Big Baby" and he finishes with the two-hand slam (91-77 5:21)!
Two free throws by Gasol get Memphis within twelve, then Ray tries to lob a pass inside to Tony but it's over his head and out of bounds; Memphis regains possession, and Gay makes 'em pay with a three-pointer (91-82 3:48).
Tony then misses the layup attempt (!), but Davis fights Gasol for the rebound and ends up being called for the foul ... That gives the Grizzlies back possession with 3:38 to go (still a lot of time), as Doc doesn't want to take any chances and gets both Garnett and Pierce back on the floor ("Big Baby" and Tony sit). Meanwhile, Navarro sends an alleyoop pass to Gasol for the two-hand slam (91-84 3:25)!
Crowd's getting nervous, as Ray sends a bad pass over to Posey (not his night) for the backcourt violation; Heinsohn claims "this is not the time of the game you wanna start turning the ball over" (brilliant!), as Memphis regains possession. Gay tries to make the strong move down the lane, but Posey strips him (yes!) and Pierce recovers the loose ball. He slowly takes it up the floor, and tries to pass inside to Garnett, but Miller steps in for the steal (no!).
The Grizzlies get another chance, as Mike makes the fullcourt pass to Navarro and he beats Ray to the basket ... but his reverse layup attempt rolls out of the rim (whew!) and Pierce gets the rebound. He takes it upcourt himself, and finds House wide open for the three-point attempt, but taht misses (damn!) and Navarro comes up with the loose carom.
Memphis calls for a timeout, and when play resumes Gay frontrims the three-point shot, and Pierce takes down the rebound (his tenth); he passes to Rondo (who's back in the game) and he sends the ball inside to Garnett. He's double-teamed, so he kicks it out to Posey, and he tries to swing the ball around to Rajon, but it goes off his fingertips and out of bounds (sunuva ... ). That gives the Grizz back possession with 1:42 left in the game, and Gay buries the jumper over the outstretched hand of Garnett (91-86 1:25).
Two foul shots by Posey puts the Celts up seven with 44.3 seconds remaining, while at the other end Navarro is fouled by Ray, so he steps to the line but can only make one-of-two free throws (95-89 :40.3). That gives Boston a chance to really put the pressure on with a basket, as Pierce misses the turnaround jumper over Conley, but KG tips it in (97-89 :20) and that should pretty much do it ...
A three-pointer by Navarro with 9.6 seconds on the clock does cut it to a four-point lead, then Rondo inbounds to Ray and Jacobsen immediately fouls him. That actually gets a cheer out of the crowd, since they know that this will prevent Allen from having the second scoreless game of his career (the last time back in 1997); sure enough, he makes both free throws (100-94 :09.3).
Gay then misses a deep three-point attempt, but Navarro winds up with the offensive rebound and scores ... Meh, it simply makes the final score 100 to 96; Celts still win, so I'm happy.
