For those on the fence, here's one thing to ask yourselves: What's it going to take for the Celtics to win this year if they maintain the current core? Remember that the Celtics have limited assets ($3 million mini mid-level exception) to add talent beyond minimum contracts.

Are you confident that this core, as currently comprised, can withstand the rigors of a condensed 66-game season? Will these players be healthy in May and June? Do you believe this squad can win enough regular-season games to put itself in prime postseason position? After what we saw in the playoffs last year, is this team capable of competing with Miami with minor changes to its roster?

Ignore the noise, Danny. Go get your guy. You've never been afraid to roll the dice, and you shouldn't be now.

Personally, I think it's funny ... but my gut tells me someone is going to be reprimanded for endorsing this as a part of the NBA lexicon.

Or hey, maybe David Stern is intentionally needling one of his "golden boys" for the recent legal mess they've caused (in his eyes, at least) ... Now that I think of it, we might be seeing a lot of "anti-big name star" propaganda popping up via official league channels during this shortened season.

I can see David now ... "Shaq! Barkley! Rip these guys a new asshole!" It'll be like Mister Burns unleashing the hounds ;)

Some of you may have become familiar with this site via your social network of choice a few months back, but the "Origin Generator" (genzu.net) is a wondrous bit of online ephemera which allows you to enter any word of your choosing, then watch in amazement as the site "pixelizes" that word before morphing it into some other random word that shares many of the same pixel positions.

It's a marvelous little time waster, and with nothing better to do as the NBA lockout rages on (perhaps reaching an unfortunate climax by the end of the day?), I decided to enter some terms that are relevant to the current situation and see what the Generator would come up with.

Yesterday's game was everything that Game Three wasn't ... The Celtics played with passion, the home crowd was electric, just a fun Sunday afternoon all around.

The officiating was completely one-sided at the start of the first quarter, and the Celtics - rather than fighting through the adversity - decided as a team to simply give up and lie down for Cleveland.

Give the Cavs credit, the refs might have given them a nudge in the right direction, but Lebron and his mates were playing at the highest intensity level and simply overpowered Boston with their energy.

The bottom line is, the Celtics quit when they should've been trying to put even more doubt into the Cavaliers' collective minds with a spirited effort (win or lose) ... We'll see how they respond tomorrow afternoon.

BOSTON—Boston head coach Doc Rivers expressed disappointment Monday in being eliminated in the second round of the NBA playoffs, but deemed the Celtics' four weeks of postseason play to be "plenty."

"Last year it took us 59 days to win the NBA title, which actually seemed too long. A couple of times against the Pistons I forgot what we were even doing. Remember how the Celtics blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of Game Six against Orlando (sports.yahoo.com)? Remember how everyone said that the C's really dropped the ball and squandered a great opportunity to advance to the conference finals, that it was downright shameful to piss away such a chance to close out the game against an inexperienced team like the Magic?

Well, the almighty Cavaliers of Cleveland just blew a 15-point lead in a game that they were in complete control of - against those very same Magic players, remember! - whilst on their way to dropping Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals last night (google.com) ... so now I'm feeling a little better about that Game Six loss ;)

"Defending NBA champions" had a nice ring to it while it lasted :(

Now, it would be easy to blame injuries for the team's second round exit last night (nba.com); I mean, we've all been prepared as Celtics fans to use that excuse in the event that our team would eventually come up short in their bid to repeat as champs (come on, admit it!). However, that line of reasoning can only take one so far ... Truth be told (and I refuse to sugar-coat things), this team has played like crap on the defensive end pretty much since the beginning of the playoffs (come on, admit that too!).

I mean, I know Garnett is the alpha and omega in terms of our defensive intensity (and losing complementary defensive oriented players like Powe - and even Posey from last season - certainly doesn't help matters either), but we should NOT have seen the precipitous dropoff that we did against the likes of Chicago and Orlando. At times, these teams were getting to the basket at will, and that should just not have been allowed to happen.

The local broadcasters and columnists want to talk about "grinding" out wins and the team's gritty "never-say-die" attitude, and that's all well and good ... but you can't really hide behind those buzzwords to shield yourself from this unpleasant reality: losing just one of the "Big Three" (even if you consider him the biggest of the three) caused this team to free-fall from "world champions" to "mediocre playoff contenders." I'm sorry, but that's just the way things look from this fan's perspective.

Okay, I know I've been persona non grata here in the Celtics blogosphere this year (meaning I haven't really earned my place to bitch and moan), and maybe this is all just residual bitterness on my part after watching a season-ending 19-point blowout (in glorious HD no less!), but I just feel that the window of opportunity for this group of Celtics players to earn the label of "multi-time champions" is dangerously close to being slammed shut ... It's been said before, but Lebron and his Cavaliers are shaping up to be the Celtics of the 2009 playoffs; it just looks like their time to shine, and - if Bron Bron decides to stick around Cleveland for the time being - they just might be the team to beat for years to come.

Speaking of which, nothing to do now but hope and pray that the Cavs emerge victorious against the Lakers ... yes, that's the bitterness talking again ;)

Professional wrestler - and pride of West Newbury - John Cena was given a seat right across from the Magic bench. He sat next to C's owners Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca, who got the Celtics fan a jersey from the dressing room.

When Magic people noticed, they got him a custom Orlando jersey and, according to the Celtic types, said in effect that if wanted to stay in the seat, he had to put it on.

The locals may have been joking, but Cena didn't take any chances. Instead, at halftime, he got a piece of paper and a felt-tip pen and carefully made a sign, taking time to color in each letter:

"Leave the Magic at Disney!" he wrote.

Cena then proudly held the sign up for TV cameras.

In an interview this morning on Boston sports radio station WEEI, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said it was likely that Kevin Garnett would not be available to play at all in the playoffs.

"After today there's no way he can play," said Rivers, who left open the possibility his star could return at some point in the postseason but was not optimistic.

An NBA source confirmed to the Globe this morning that Garnett was only about 70 percent healed from the knee injury, which occured during a Feb. 19 game in Utah, and that the Celtics All-Star would likely miss the entire postseason.

Ah shit ... That's my expert blogger analysis of the situation, by the way.

Marc Spears doesn't read comic books

Whilst browsing the Boston Globe website this morning, my eyes were drawn towards this excerpt from an article penned by one Marc Spears (boston.com):

Garnett said he's looking forward to the added workload next week.

"That's fine. I'm with whatever the program calls for. At this point it's about getting better and getting healthier," he said. "I think Doc is worried about my wind a little bit. I told him I'm like [a] wolverine, I adjust quickly. They're trying to put the reins on me and I want to go, I want to go, I want to go a little bit. They just want to make sure that come playoff time I'm more than solid so everything's a precautionary mechanism."

Obviously, the brackets highlighted above signify Mr. Spears' belief that KG unintentionally left out an important article in that sentence, and was referring to your common everyday furry carnivorous mammal (en.wikipedia.org) ... However, if this were the case, then Kevin's comparison fails to make much sense; I mean, since when have wolverines been known for their "quick adjustments"? I guess they're fast little suckers, but that's not really the same thing.

No, Mister Spears, I would conjecture that Kevin was instead talking about Wolverine (note the capitalization of the w to signify a proper name) and - more specifically - the Marvel hero's mutant healing factor (wikia.com).

I guess we can't really blame Marc for not being a comic-book geek ... Big dude like that was probably a jock in high school, ripping the comix out of little kids' hands before stuffing them into their lockers ;)

As you certainly know by now, Stephon has gone on record claiming that he received a verbal commitment from the Celtics that they will sign him once the Knicks buy out his contract, but now the Boston Herald comes out with a report disputing those claims (news.bostonherald.com) ... Wow, you mean Stephon Marbury might actually be making stuff up? Shocking!

There's also this quote from the man himself that I found ... well, "disturbing" is probably the right word to use:

"The question to be asked to the Knicks is: Are they fearful for me playing for another Eastern Conference team? My thing is, they shouldn't be fearful. They're trying to get under the cap for 2010. During Thursday's 10-point victory over the Magic (nba.com), I noticed that Orlando big man Dwight Howard kept looking at his right hand after scoring a basket ... At first, I thought Dwight might've jammed a finger or otherwise injured the hand, but apparently that's just part of his normal routine (orlandosentinel.com):

It still has some comedic value, but Howard probably needs a new celebration after making baskets. After tossing in a running hook over an outstretched Kendrick Perkins and Garnett in the first quarter, Howard performed his usual celebration of running down the court and staring confusedly at his hands. For those who don't know what we're talking about, think "Is it the shoes?" with a visual aid. But for a guy promising wonderment while defending his all-star dunk contest title in February, Howard probably is due for a change for his in-game celebration as well.

In other words, Dwight wasn't checking on a potential injury, he was ripping off Booker T (tnawrestling.com) ...

After reading David Fleming's article over at Page 2 yesterday (sports.espn.go.com), my mind immediately jumped to those "Really!?! with Seth and Amy" skits from Weekend Update (snltranscripts.jt.org) ...

Really? You're seriously going to argue that the Pittsburgh Steelers are the greatest franchise in the history of team sports? REALLY? Wow!

Here's the part where he tries to discount the 17-time world champions and their accomplishments throughout the decades:

Purchased by Art Rooney Sr. in 1933, with $2,500 he supposedly won at the track (love that), the Steelers initially struggled for decades. But since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 (something Art Sr. helped orchestrate), no one's been better. No one. And now, after seven Super Bowls, 30 postseason wins, seven championship games in the past 14 years, 19 Hall of Famers and the dynasty of the 1970s that includes probably the greatest, baddest football team ever assembled ... if you factor in the popularity of the NFL and the quaint but sturdy Midwestern soul of this franchise, it's hard to argue against what the Steelers have built.

Yes, of course, I know the Montreal Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups. But if we're talking about the best-run, most successful franchise in our lifetime, the Habs are disqualified for winning only two Cups in the past 30 years. There are the defending NBA champs in Boston, of course, who have collected 17 titles, but they too were largely a non-factor for the past two decades. The Cowboys? America's Team? Please. They haven't won a playoff game in a dozen years.

Anyone else find it odd that Fleming seems to go out of his way to avoid referring to the Celtics by name?

Anyway, it would appear that ESPN's readership is not buying into his argument, as an online poll at the site currently has the Steelers ranked third in a four-team race (sports.espn.go.com) ... For the record, the Celts are in second place, right behind the - ugh - Yankees.You'll notice that all of the New England states know what the correct answer is ;)

EDIT: Total votes have now passed 25,000 (25,327 as of January 26th), and the Celts are - sadly - still a distant second ...

I'd like to thank the fine folks over at "The Dino Radja Experience" (an hilarious Celtics-centric podcast that you all should check out) for giving my old website a plug on the December 30th edition (newengland.comcastsportsnet.com) of their program ... Of course, I had only gotten around to listening to the show yesterday, which shows just how far behind I've gotten in my listening habits!

Anyway, I had first checked out the show about a month ago and was immediately hooked, so I decided to shoot them off an email with a link to my old Dino Radja fan site (archive.org); I figured only like-minded individuals such as these would truly appreciate it.

Sure enough, hosts Rich Levine and Nick Altschuler gave it a mention (fast-forward to 18:13 for the relevant part), going so far as to declare me "the man" as well as their "biggest fan" ... I don't remember actually making such a claim in my email, but I'll happily take up the mantle ;)

The College of the Holy Cross has decided to dedicate the latest issue of the school's official magazine to one of their most famous alumni ... You might recognize the name Bob Cousy, ever heard of him?

Well, for those of you who even bother to still check the RSS feeds for this li'l ol' blog of mine, I feel that I owe you some kind of an explanation for the dearth of new content to be found ... Now, if you'll remember ALLLLLL the way back to my "glorious" return to the online Celtics community, you'll recall that I had some reservations about how much free time I would actually have to spend on this venture, what with graduate school and various other commitments I have in the "real world."

Nevertheless, I decided to go through with the experiment, and - not to toot my own horn or anything - I feel that I was chugging along pretty good there for awhile. I was posting my detailed recaps in a semi-timely manner, I was getting my name back out there (ballhype.com), the big boys (celticsblog.com) were giving my work some much-appreciated exposure, and - most importantly - the Celtics were kicking ass on the court! It all seemed to be coming together quite nicely ...

And that's when the bottom fell out (for me, not for the team).

I dunno, it's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when posting to this blog stopped being "fun" and started being "work" (and when you already have a 9-to-5 job PLUS graduate-school assignments that need to be submitted, piling more work on top of that really is no fun) ... I guess it all started at the beginning of the new year, when each game recap became more and more "mentally draining" - sorry for being so melodramatic - to complete.

To better explain, let me just give you all a little insight into the process of how I actually compose my recaps for each game (thus opening a window into my madness) ... On a typical gamenight, I would watch the entire contest live - while simultaneously taping the game via DVR - and take quick notes on my laptop when something occurred that I wanted to reference in the recap itself; you know, big scoring runs, Tommy quotes, things like that. Then, once the game was complete, I would go back and rewind to those particular moments so that I could flesh out said notes with more in-depth analysis. Finally, I would retype the entire recap to fix grammatical errors and make it more "post-worthy", add various other sundry details (player nicknames, stats, "Celt of the Game", etc.) then finally upload the entire she-bang to this blog the next day (but usually a little more tardy than that).

Now, when I was doing this kind of recapping back in my college days, time wasn't really an issue ... I typically had loads of free time in between classes to rewatch the game highlights (only had a VCR to work with back then) and then type things up for my website; hell, I remember some days during the week I would have only a single class to attend, which left plenty of opportunities to work on my Celtics page alongside other school-related activities (glug glug glug).

However, a full-time job and graduate work doesn't leave me with such opportunities in this day and age ... I had to make sure I finished these game recaps on the same night as the game itself, so that meant some nights staying up until 2 in the morning doing nothing but watching highlights on TV. Believe me, now that I'm an old man of 31, that's not such an easy task anymore!

Thus, a lack of sleep meant that my work began to suffer, and game recaps were being submitted later and later (and not at the level of quality that I was shooting for) ... Once the All-Star Break rolled around, I thought it would give me a chance to recharge my batteries and tackle my game-recapping "duties" anew. Sadly, once the games resumed, Boston immediately began that West Coast road trip; sure enough, those 10 PM tip-off times were what ultimately broke me, and I was left asking myself "What's the point of doing this if it's no longer fun (ESPECIALLY if I'm not getting paid to do it?!)".

Anyway, my intention wasn't to turn this piece into a full-blown whine-a-thon like the kind you'll typically find on the blogosphere (Waah! My life is so hard! Feel pity for me! Waah! Waah!), so let me just cut to the chase ... Suffice it to say, I came to the realization that I no longer have the time nor the energy to create the kind of content that I once did, and I haven't written a game recap since.

*cue the world's smallest violin*

Once I made this decision, it was time to reasses my entire reason for creating this blog in the first place ... When I first came back on the online Celtics scene, I was under the delusional assumption that I could slowly build it back up into the honest-to-goodness business venture that I had abandoned once Rivals.Com went under in the Dot-Com Bubble Burt of Ninety-Nine. Unfortunately, it's become clear to me that that ship has sailed.

However, don't take this to mean that I'm tucking my tail between my legs and going back into online "retirement" ... I still feel passionate about this team and its players, and I still feel like I have something to contribute to the online conversation when it comes to the defending World Champions (man, it lifts my spirits just typing those words!).

So, as a brand-new NBA season lays before us, I'm going to simply accept the fact that detailed game recaps are a thing of the past for me ... Instead, I'll be checking in periodically with random observations on the team and its progress. Nothing more, nothing less - it's back to basics for this guy!

Will these posts be earth-shattering revelations that rock the very foundations of this team and the league? Probably not. Will they be entertaining and give you something to smile about as the season progresses? I'll sure give it my best shot.

So, that's where we stand right now - I'm keeping this blog going for as long as I can, but I just can't guarantee that you'll be getting fresh content every single day (hey, I'm just being honest with you guys) ... Hopefully, all of you kind people will still decide to stick around and check in every now and then.

It's kind of funny, really ... When I first began writing about the Celtics online back in the mid-90s, it was meant to be a "hobby" and nothing more. Then, it suddenly became feasible to generate a little income from this whole "World Wide Web" thing, so I decided to take a shot and turn it into a business venture. Once the dot-com bubble put an end to that, the idea laid dormant for a few years, until I worked up the nerve to try and resume this "business" where I left off by starting a blog. However, I've wasted enough of your time explaining how this strategy no longer seems feasible, so I've come back full circle to maintaining this site as a simple hobby as nothing more.

Funny how life works, isn't it?

"It is safe to say that everybody on this team contributed to the championship. You know, not enough focus has been put on, until the end, the depth of the bench on the Boston Celtics. They had a lot of players come off the bench to make a huge difference, and although the three big names, three great NBA players were there, but the real strength was the depth of the roster, I think. And I think most of the basketball experts will tell you that's the case. So I congratulate all of you for contributing to something that was very important. We'll remember your stifling defense, we'll remember your sharp shooting and the way -- we'll remember the way you played together as a unit, as a team."

"We just want to say it's truly an honor to be here in your house today. And on behalf of the Celtics organization, we'd like to thank you. And from what I hear, you played a little high school basketball yourself. So we're going to honor you with a basketball signed from our team. Dave thanks Kevin and Ray for coming on the show on such short notice. Says Ray, "Back in the 80s when you won a championship, you’d say 'We're going to Disneyland.' Now in 2000 when you win a championship, you say 'We're going to David Letterman.'"

Yeah!

You can tell Dave appreciates the history and the dynasty and the greatness of the Boston Celtics. This is their 17 NBA Championship. Dave asks if any of the old Celtics from those great teams come around the gym to help out. Kevin and Ray say players come around all the time and speak to them about the Celtic pride. Bill Russell is a frequent visitor and is considered the cornerstone of the franchise. Ray Allen says Bill Russell is a very funny guy. Ray says Bill Russell will say something that isn't particularly funny, and then he'll laugh and continue to laugh until you start laughing along with him. Dave says he does the same thing here every night.

Dave holds up a copy of an October issue of Sports Illustrated with the Celtic's Big 3 on the cover: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce. The team was coming off a dismal season, one of the team's worst ever, and here the Celtics were featured on the cover of S.I. with the newly acquired Garnett and Allen. Dave says the Boston Celtic uniform is perfect; none better. The Los Angeles Lakers uniform? Dave says they look like dental hygienists with that funny-looking thing around their collar.

Back in the day, Celtic president Red Auerbach was famous for lighting up a cigar inside the Boston Garden was victory was at hand. It is a well-known tradition. Was there any cigar smoking after the game? Kevin says there was a lot of cigar smoking after the game. Good. I like traditions, no matter how unhealthy.

Shortly before Game 5 in Los Angeles, Ray Allen's 17-month-old son had fallen ill. While the team traveled back to Boston for Game 6, Ray stayed behind in L.A. to be with his son in the hospital. Tests were done and it was diagnosed that he had diabetes. That's a lot to put on a father's mind. Basketball took a back seat . . . way in the back . . . at this time. Dave then reaches behind the desk and pulls out the Larry O'Brien Championship trophy and proclaims, "Well, then, this is for your son, Walker."

Very touching.

The Boston Celtics . . . out of nowhere . . . . CHAMPIONS! Just like the New York Giants . . . . sorry.

Garnett helped design his first signature shoe for Adidas — The Garnett — which began selling in July exclusively at Foot Locker and www.adidas.com. The Minnesota Timberwolves forward's second shoe, KG2, is due in February.

Garnett's personality and leadership roles were key to Adidas signing him in August 2003. He's one of three NBA players on its roster.

"He represents the brand perfectly," Kyle says. "You have an athlete who inspires a lot of people around him. He carries his family and friends and does it with a smile. He sees it as a privilege. That was important for us."

Garnett's personality is showcased in the ad for The Garnett shoe. It shows him carrying family, friends and neighbors on his shoulders. In the ad, he strolls down the street to the sound of Etta James singing He's Got the Whole World In His Hands as people climb aboard the 6-foot, 11-inch MVP. Real friends and family appear in the ad.

"The ad is about Kevin's ability to carry a team, a city or the world on his back," says Chuck McBride, executive creative director, with Adidas' ad agency, TBWA/Chiat/Day, San Francisco.

Garnett is actually carrying four people suspended by harnesses. Others were added digitally.

The company worked with Chiat/Day to make sure the Garnett ad fit with Adidas' overall "Impossible is Nothing" image campaign. The message: The right attitude and sports can allow you to achieve great things.

Consumers surveyed by Ad Track, USA TODAY's weekly poll, got the message and liked it. Of those familiar with the Garnett ad, 28% like it "a lot," vs. the Ad Track average of 21%.

when handling the rock — he playfully avoids all the kids who are on the
sidewalk trying to tag him.
KG: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Laughter, joy, enthusiasm. Finally, he runs out of his scene and –
We see KG transition into a gladiator in a Roman Coliseum. In direct
contrast to the little kid, KG is all business as he battles his foes like he
battles under the boards.
KG: Get off me!
The coliseum crowd roars its approval as KG knocks yet another gladiator
to the ground, and celebrates his victory.
Then — we see KG onstage at a comedy club. Dressed in a suit, and
standing alone in the spotlight at a microphone, he already has the crowd
cracking up — and unlike the KG we just saw, he is cracking up as well.
KG: (laughing) ... no I’m serious. You said that too fast!
The crowd busts out — laughing and going wild.
KG smiles and holds up his hands.
KG: Thank you!
He backs away from the microphone, waving to the crowd. He turns and walks
through the wall behind him when –
A light clicks on and we see KG — as player and man alone on the wooden
floor of a basketball court. Holding a ball in his hands, KG looks around at
the place where it all comes together — his cathedral, his home.
He smiles, and starts to dribble, taking off toward the basket.

Q. Can you talk about having a career All-Star high tonight? And for a second did you think you were in the running for MVP?

RAY ALLEN: I didn't think about it. I didn't even know how many points I had until I did the interview afterwards. Those points add up most definitely. I told my family before when I left the hotel room today, I told them that this is my eighth All-Star Game. They're so proud of me, they're happy for me to be here. I told them, I know you guys want to see me in the game, and you want to be excited about me.
But, you know, Doc and I talked. I said, If you need to play me, play me. But don't worry about me being on the bench. Because I'm not going to be mad at you if you don't play me. We're on the same team. So there was a point where when I started rolling, I was happier for them than I was for myself, thinking about myself and what might be the consequences of how I was playing. Because I know they were excited that I was playing well, and I could hear them cheering in the crowd.
A lot of times that's what pushes me when I come to the All-Star Game, they're so proud, and wearing my jersey. And people supporting me watching TV. It feels good to play good and play well for them out on the floor.

ABC/ESPN produced a short biography on how Leon Powe overcame tremendous adversity to make it on one of the NBA's most elite franchises, the Boston Celtics.

The night this aired, Leon Powe scored 21 points in less than 15 minutes to spark the Boston Celtics to a 2-0 lead over the LA Lakers.

DOC RIVERS: As a coach, I guess you should never cheer for a player, and I clearly cheer for him. He's a solid human being. If you met Leon and didn't know his story, the last thing you would think is "homeless" ...
VOICEOVER: Leon Powe grew up in Oakland, California, the oldest of seven siblings raised by their mother Connie. Powe was seven years old when everything started to spiral downward.
POWE: I remember it like it was yesterday. I was coming home from school, I seen all the firemen and the police officers out there around my house. And my moms came up to me and told me the house burned down.
VOICEOVER: With nowhere to go, the family slept anywhere they could, moving more than twenty times in six years, alternating between homeless shelters, motels, even abandoned cars.
POWE: We lived in the cars, hotels, we didn't have too much food to go on. All that just built up ...
VOICEOVER: Powe sometimes skipped school to care for his brothers and sisters, while his mom went to work.
POWE: She was doing the best she could. Every Thanksgiving, every Christmas, she tried to make sure we had something. Sometimes I know, she wouldn't tell me but I know she had passed up on her food just to give it to us. And it might've been just McDonald's or couple cheeseburgers or something, we had to eat. And she'd give it to us, and I knew that, so I wouldn't eat. I'd try to give it back to her, then give it to my little brothers and sisters.
VOICEOVER: When he was ten years old, his mother was caught stealing groceries and was sentenced to 90 days in county jail. The state placed Powe and his siblings into foster care.
WARD: Growing up in Oakland, man, it's real rough.
VOICEOVER: In the seventh grade, Powe met Bernard Ward, the father of one of his childhood friends. Ward would become Powe's mentor.
WARD: I had told Leon, I'm not gonna let you mess up like that, man. We're gonna try to do something with your life.
POWE: I told him my goals, and he was like, "Well, you're gonna need school." And that's how, the light bulb really went off in my head.
VOICEOVER: By the time he entered high school, Powe's grades began to climb, and his basketball skills began to soar.
JONAS ZUCKERMAN: Something clicked. I never once chased him down to say, "Leon you have to go to class." Never once said, "Leon you have to come here. We have to work on this." It was him chasing me down, "Mister Z, can we work on this essay? Can we do this project?"
VOICEOVER: Powe and his mother remained close. She often attended his games as he became one of the nation's top high school prospects. But in his junior year, four days before his state championship game, Powe's mother passed away from a chronic heart condition.
POWE: I was thinking how my momma said that, you know, when she see me play it made her real happy. My mom was a strong woman and she never gave up, so everytime I get stuck or find myself in a tough situation, all I do is think about my moms, my family, what she went through and my brothers and sisters went through, and what I went through.
VOICEOVER: Powe played his college ball at Cal before joining the Celtics in 2006. Off the court, he now spends time passing on the life lessons he's learned to young people.
WARD: I told him, it's bigger than basketball, and you're gonna be able to touch some lives just from everything you done been through ...

Biography
Posey attended and played basketball at Chamberlin Middle School and Chamberlin High School in Twinsburg, Ohio. He grew up with Tennessee Titans cornerback Kelly Herndon who also went to Chamberlin. Posey was selected out of Xavier University by the Denver Nuggets with the 18th pick of the 1999 NBA Draft. He played a little over three seasons with the team before being sent to the Houston Rockets in a three-team deal also involving the Philadelphia 76ers on December 18, 2002. After finishing the season with the Rockets, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies as a free agent in the 2003 off-season. On August 2, 2005, Posey was involved in the largest trade in NBA history, which involved 13 players and five different teams. Through this trade, the Miami Heat acquired point guard Jason Williams, forward Antoine Walker, shooting guard Andre Emmett, and the draft rights to Roberto Duenas. The Memphis Grizzlies received shooting guard Eddie Jones, and point guard Raul Lopez. Boston, who dealt Walker to the Heat, received a package that included Qyntel Woods, the draft rights to Albert Miralles, two second-round draft picks, and cash. The Boston Celtics also picked up Curtis Borchardt. Utah was able to acquire center Greg Ostertag, and the New Orleans Hornets acquired small forward Rasual Butler and shooting guard Kirk Snyder. With the Heat, Posey won the first NBA championship of his career in 2006. Posey averaged 7.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 2005-06. He is notable for his three-point shooting ability. Posey had a somewhat disappointing regular season with Miami, but in the playoffs did more than expected. Now being switched to the Heat's sixth man, Posey was able to average 11.8 points per game on 48.8 shooting against Miami's first-round opponent, the Chicago Bulls. Against Miami's second-round opponent, the New Jersey Nets, Posey was forced to play defense, particularly guarding Vince Carter or Richard Jefferson. Although Posey's scoring dropped, his defense was said to have been the key to the Heat's advancement into the conference finals. Posey again had to focus on defense against Miami's third-round opponent, the Detroit Pistons, particularly guarding Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and even sometimes Chauncey Billups or Rasheed Wallace. Posey was put to guard these players because other Miami perimeter defenders have other priorities. Dwyane Wade, for example, focuses on offense more than defense, and that is a huge reason why he averaged the most points for his team. Other perimeter players such as Jason Williams or Antoine Walker are labeled poor defensive players and would get taken advantage of have they been challenged defensively. Against the Dallas Mavericks, James Posey was a key factor on both ends of the court. Defensively, he, along with Udonis Haslem, provided tough defense on the Mavericks All-Star, Dirk Nowitzki. He also guarded Josh Howard, who had caused problems for Miami when Antoine Walker was guarding him. On the offensive end, Posey played a huge role in knocking down shots because Miami's All-Stars, Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal, were often double-teamed and needed to pass the ball. In Game 6 of the NBA Finals, Posey hit a huge shot to give Miami an 87-81 advantage with four minutes remaining. In Game 4 of the Finals, Posey was very impressive in Miami's blowout, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Head coach Pat Riley said he likes the switch to have Posey come off the bench (for most of the regular season, Riley would have Posey start and Walker come off the bench). However, it seems that both of the players benefited from the change. On July 1, 2006, Posey opted to exercise his $6.4 million contract option, opting not to become a free agent. On April 9, 2007, Posey was arrested on a DUI charge and was taken to a Miami-Dade County Prison.[1] However, Posey continued playing with the Heat and coach Pat Riley stated he would support Posey.On August 25, 2007,

Q. You were talking about what you felt and how you felt the team was kind of disrespected with the best defense and 66 wins. Did the rest of the team feel like that? Also, and if you guys did, besides winning a championship, how did you guys deal with that every day?
BRIAN SCALABRINE: I don't even think it seeped into any of us. We're a confident bunch of guys. It was like the first time we were kind of underdogs. But as we went along people picked Detroit against us, even sometimes Cleveland against us. I will say Cleveland played us tough. They were a great team. Mike Brown did a great job, LeBron James did a great job. But once again, our defense was the key, and that's where we were at today.

Q. Talking about defense, even in the two preseason games, you guys have done a great job on Kobe in all the games that you've played him this year. What do you guys do against him specifically that other teams can't do against him?
BRIAN SCALABRINE: What we do against Kobe is we try really, really, really hard.

Q. That's it?
BRIAN SCALABRINE: No, I mean, we do our defensive philosophy, and whatever our defensive philosophy is, it is the same against Kobe as it was against Joe Johnson in Atlanta who is a great player, same against LeBron James who is a great player, and Detroit who kind of plays you as a team. But Kobe is a special player and you've got to try to make him do what he doesn't want to do. A reflection of that is a world championship in six games.

Uh, very good time. It's pretty fun, my first time doing a photoshoot like this, with a lotta action shots so it's pretty fun.

Have you ever collected cards as a kid or ever?

I did, I actually used to collect cards with my brothers and sisters, so we have a big collection of cards.

You still have those cards?

Yeah, I do. I still have the cards, uh, they're in the garage somewhere, so I kinda got away from it. But now, y'know, now that I could probably find my Celtics one I'll probably start it back up.

Any favorite card from the old ones?

Uh, couple of my Jordan cards. Those are the cards that we used to collect and keep, so those cards are one of our favorites.

As a kid, did you ever think that you would be on a basketball card?

Never would I have thought, uh, it's a good feeling to see myself on my own card. Uh, and signing them, y'know, so now I'm one of those players that we used to collect, and now I can have them in my collection.

It is the most famous radio call in basketball history, hoops' equivalent to Russ Hodges' famed "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" from baseball's 1951 National League playoffs. There simply is nothing like the gravelly tones of the late Celtics broadcaster Johnny Most describing the closing seconds of Game 7 of the 1965 Eastern Conference Finals between the defending champion Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers.

First, to set the scene: The Celtics' lead had shriveled to 110-109, and Philadelphia regained possession with five seconds left after an inbounds pass attempt by Boston's Bill Russell hit one of the wires that ran down from the ceiling of Boston Garden and helped support the baskets in those days.

Hall of Fame guard Hal Greer prepared to toss the ball inbounds under his own basket. The logical target seemed to be massive Wilt Chamberlain in the low post, but Russell fronted Chamberlain and took away that option. K.C. Jones, guarding Greer, leaped along the baseline and frantically waved his arms to distract him as the five seconds ticked away.

To get a better view of the court, Greer jumped up and spotted high-scoring forward Chet Walker, seemingly open beyond the key. But Boston's John Havlicek had taken a position several feet off the direct line between Greer and Walker, making it look like Walker was open when he really wasn't. After counting off a couple of seconds in his head, Havlicek sneaked a peek over his shoulder at Greer just as he prepared to release the ball. He moved into the passing lane ... but let Most tell it:

"Greer is putting the ball into play. He gets it out deep," Most intones, before his voices rises into a frenzy. "Havlicek steals it. Over to Sam Jones. Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over! Johnny Havlicek stole the ball!"

Havlicek tipped the inbounds pass away from Walker and toward teammate Jones, who dribbled out the clock as fans poured onto the court. The Celtics had the win, and would go on to capture their seventh consecutive championship.

Havlicek went on to score over 26,000 points in an NBA career that lasted 16 seasons, but he is best remembered for that steal immortalized on tape by the late Johnny Most.

THE PRESIDENT: Welcome to the White House. (Applause.) Please be seated. So, Celtic Pride is back. (Applause.) So a friend of mine, who is a huge Celtics fan, said, why don't you call it the "Boston Three Party"? I said, because it took a team to win. And I welcome the Boston Celtics team that has brought great pride to the Boston area. You know, I was telling them, I went to school up there. And those were the days when the Celtics were awesome. And there was a little bit of a drought, but sure enough that drought ended -- with the NBA championship. And I welcome you all to the White House as NBA champs.

I congratulate the -- all those who work in the organization for joining us. Welcome to members of Congress. Glad you all are here. I welcome members of my administration who have come; members of the United States Armed Forces who are with us today -- (applause) -- Boston Celtics fans who are with us today. (Applause.) I don't think we've had this many fans since St. Patrick's Day, Senator. (Laughter.) And finally, and most importantly, the players who brought the championship back to Boston. Welcome. Congratulations to you. (Applause.)

It's amazing how sports works, isn't it? At the beginning of last season, few would have predicted how this season would have ended. After all, the Celtics had finished with the second worst record in the NBA. And the two-decade championship drought was pretty likely to continue -- at least that's what the experts said. There's a lot of experts in life these days -- hadn't noticed. (Laughter.)

Except the owners were determined to win. They said, we're going to bring a winner for our fans. These are fan-oriented owners who understand that a sports franchise is only good as its fan base. And then you hired a general manager who knew what it meant to be a champion. You didn't hire him; he's been there for a while. But he knew what it meant to be a champion. After all, he's from the 1986 championship team. And he knows there's something special that needs to be put together to make a team work, and that's Danny Ainge.

And so during the offseason, he figured out the need to bring maybe some new blood -- or some old new blood. (Laughter.) Well, older new blood. And of course, you know, the famous trades were made for -- the famous pickups were Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. And these guys are awesome players. But Danny Ainge would be the first to tell you -- by the way, the NBA Executive of the Year would be the first to tell you, it takes an entire team to win a championship. You bet these two people were awesome additions to the team, but it required a bunch of people playing together for the common good to win.

He brought unity to the team. And he helped bring the championship back to Boston.

The team got off to a fast start; they won the first eight games and they never looked back for 66 wins -- the NBA's best record. And then you got in the playoffs, which didn't exactly go as smoothly as some people thought -- (laughter) -- but nevertheless, when it came time to defend your home court, this team figured out how to do it.

And then, of course, the L.A. Lakers in the finals. For baby boomers like me, that is the -- that was a reminder of a great basketball rivalry. So, like, Boston fans were screaming, "Beat L.A.!" at the top of their lungs, and that's exactly what this team did in six hard-fought games. If you're a basketball fan or a sports fan, it was really awesome to watch, wasn't it? If you're a Boston Red Sox fan it was doubly awesome to watch -- (laughter) -- Boston Celtics fan -- man, you were in heaven. (Laughter.)

Despite his knee injury early in the series, this team's captain Paul Pierce played with courage. You know, leadership comes in all different kinds of ways. Playing hurt in a championship game is the ultimate sign of leadership. And that's why he won the MVP honors for the NBA finals. And that's why the league calls him "The Truth." This team calls him the captain. (Applause.)

It is safe to say that everybody on this team contributed to the championship. You know, not enough focus has been put on, until the end, the depth of the bench on the Boston Celtics. They had a lot of players come off the bench to make a huge difference, and although the three big names, three great NBA players were there, but the real strength was the depth of the roster, I think. And I think most of the basketball experts will tell you that's the case. So I congratulate all of you for contributing to something that was very important. We'll remember your stifling defense, we'll remember your sharp shooting and the way -- we'll remember the way you played together as a unit, as a team.

I don't know if you know what that's talking about here. Probably most people outside Boston don't. It is a African word for unity that they declared when they broke the huddle. I'm proud of your character. I want to thank the Celtic organization for what you do off the court as well. I believe there is a huge responsibility not only to try to win on the court but to be responsible citizens in the community in which you live. The Shamrock Foundation, for example, helps disadvantaged children during the season and after the season. I appreciate the fact that during the second quarter of every home game, the Celtics honor some caring citizen; someone who I said is a soldier in the army of compassion. With the "Hero Among Us" program, that's a really good idea, and I thank you for doing that. I want to congratulate you for worrying about children and literacy and using your special status in society to set a good example.

Most of all I congratulate you for being champs. I wish you all the very best for the next season. Should you win it, you can find me in Texas. (Laughter and applause.)

Darius Miles: low-risk investment, or deal-breaking asshole?

Well, there had been rumors of interest on the Celtics' part for the last month or so, but yesterday it was made official:

You remember young Darius, don't you? The guy who - at the time - was the highest pick ever to come straight outta high school (espn.go.com)? The guy with so much hype that they made a documentary (imdb.com) about his first couple of seasons at the pro level? The guy who did that "fists-to-the-head-bump" thing (sportingnews.com)? The guy who went on to help Portland earn their "Jailblazers" nicknames, with stunts like getting suspended for calling his coach the n-word (usatoday.com)? The guy who hasn't played in the league for the last two seasons due to microfracture surgery (blog.oregonlive.com)? The guy who's gonna have to miss the first ten games of the upcoming season serving a drug suspension (myespn.go.com)?

Yeah, the Celtics just signed that guy.

Now, I can't begrudge Danny Ainge too much for taking a chance on this guy ... If it turns out that health issues are no longer a factor, and Darius can give the team some productive minutes off the bench, then this will be another shining example of Danny's foresight when it comes to injury (right alongside Ray Allen's gimpy ankles and Leon Powe's questionable knees).

Also, if Mr. Miles (youtube.com) can learn to thrive within a championship atmosphere and not cause problems in the lockerroom (you'd think the combined efforts of Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett can keep the youngster in check), then this will be another gold star on Danny's resume when it comes to taking a chance on players with questionable character traits (right alongside Ricky Davis and ... y'know, never mind that last one).

So, while I can appreciate the effort to address the loss of James Posey by strengthening the bench, I can't help but wonder: is this an "ego" move on Ainge's part, to prove that he can fit any baller into his championship equation and still come out on top? Is he risking the entire team chemistry (UBUNTU, baby!) by adding one troubled 26-year-old? Do the risks outway the rewards in this case?

Or am I just getting a smidge too worked up over the whole thing? Hey, Celtics news has come to a near standstill - before this story broke the Globe's Celtics page (boston.com) hadn't been updated for weeks! - I need something to get worked up about ;)

I've been catching up on some online readings over the last couple of weeks, when I came across this entry from Celtics legend JoJo White's blog during the Finals (nbrpa.com), and I knew I had to share:

Back in the 1970s we always had this issue with the Chicago Bulls. They always played us physical and never took it easy on us.

They had guys like Norm Van Lier and Jerry Sloan, who were tough as nails and weren't afraid to scrap. We were playing them back in '73 and I remember driving to the basket, left my feet and then Sloan got under me and flopped.The referee Darrell Garretson called a charge on me and that cost us the game.

After the call, Tommy Heinsohn just lost it. I mean, he was ready to strangle him on the court. After the game my teammate Tom "Satch" Sanders gave me the heads up that Tommy was waiting for Darrell under the bleachers.

We hustled out of the locker room to stop Tommy from doing something foolish and he was fixed on giving Garretson a piece of his mind. Darrell eventually comes out and Tommy is screaming, "I'm going to kill him, I'm going to kill him."

Thank goodness Satch and I were there because there's no telling what would have happened. Before we dragged Tommy away he yelled at Garretson, "I hope your plane goes down in flames tonight."

Later on that night the team gets to the airport and there's Darrell at the gate. Turns out he was on our flight. Back then we all flew together there were no chartered flights.

Did Ainge just "pull a Riley"?

By now, you've all heard the bad news (sports.espn.go.com) ... Someone was willing to offer James Posey a four-year contract, and that someone was not Danny Ainge; rather, it's the Hornets of New Orleans who will take the gamble on having a 36-year-old wingman taking up space on their future payroll.

So, we're only a couple of weeks removed from championship euphoria - and just a mere three days hence from seeing Posey as a member of the team signing Celtics DVDs (boston.com) - but now comes the cold hard reality of the business side of the National Basketball Association ... Ainge and the owners made a business decision that they could not involve themselves in a long-term commitment with Mister Posey, and he in turn made a decision that he felt was in the best interests of his family's financial stability.

I certainly can't fault Posey for taking the bigger payday (he certainly earned it), and perhaps this will - in time - turn out to be the correct move on the Celtics' part: while this certainly hurts the depth of our bench for next season, it's not like the team still can't put forth a pretty good lineup night in and night out (there are these players called KG and the Truth whom - I've heard - ain't too shabby).

Is anyone really ready to say that we're completely out of the running for Banner No. 18, due to the absence of one man (not named Garnett or Pierce or Allen)? No, the championship window isn't shut just yet, and then - over the next four years - we just might find ourselves with the salary cap flexibility needed to land some incredible players in lieu of Posey, for future championship runs; hey, it could happen!

Of course, having said all that, I can't help but look upon the path that the team has chosen and see a glaring example of the dangers such a decision can bring ... namely, the 2007-08 Miami Heat (dallasnews.com) *shudder*

Remember, Pat Riley didn't feel it was necessary to make a financial commitment to James Posey either, and see where that got him ... From NBA champions in '06 to NBA cellar dwellers just two years later.

Now, one can certainly argue that other factors were at work in Miami's downfall (the loss of other key personnel like Eddie Jones, Dwyane Wade getting hurt, Shaq getting old/disinterested, etc.) ... but the fact remains that the Heat's loss of that championship spark coincided with the departure of the league's premiere sixth man.

His defensity intensity, his commitment to the team ideal, his man-tastic pregame hugs ... Once those things were gone, the Miami ballclub (and their title aspirations) withered and died.

Are the Celtics doomed to suffer a similar fate? Must they follow the same path, that of an aging team who went for it all for the chance at a title, only to quickly implode and become mired in mediocrity once that goal was accomplished?

*Gulp* ... I sure hope not.

Cousy: the best PG to come out of NYC?

It's a little early (only 261 votes cast at the time of this posting), but ESPN is running a poll (sports.espn.go.com) to determine which New York City-born point guard was the best to ever lace up the sneakers ...

Of course, my vote went to the Cooz at number one, but I do find it a little surprising that four of the thirteen names chosen have worn a Celtics jersey at one point in their respective careers:

EDIT: Alright, we have a larger sampling to work with now (12,215 total votes), and Cousy is still far and away the leader, with 138,536 points and 5751 first-place votes ... Archibald is still second in first-place votes (3083).

The NEW New Big Three: O'Bryant, Posey ... Marbury?

Okay, we're a week or so into the 2008 Summer of Free Agency ... Thus far, the Celtics have signed the guy whose name sounds really REALLY Irish - even his friggin' middle name is "Fitzgerald" - but isn't Irish at all (boston.com):

The Celtics are hoping a more mature Patrick O'Bryant will reach his potential after failing to do so with Golden State.

The Celtics signed the seldom-used 7-foot, 250-pound center yesterday to a two-year, $3 million contract, according to an NBA source. O'Bryant is expected to back up Kendrick Perkins. O'Bryant, 22, was the ninth pick in the 2006 NBA draft, but rarely played during two seasons with the Warriors.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to come in the league and prove myself," said O'Bryant yesterday in a phone interview. "I didn't do a very good job the first two years. I need to prove I belong here and belong for a long time."

O'Bryant averaged 13.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks during his sophomore season at Bradley, then left school for the NBA. The Blaine, Minn., native averaged only 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 16 games as a rookie in the 2006-07 season, although he averaged 12 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in 25 games for Bakersfield in the National Basketball Development League.

Now, it's looking more and more like Danny Ainge's gambit concerning James Posey is going to pay off (boston.com):

Celtics forward James Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstien, said Sunday that there could be "something" contract-wise for his client on Monday. Bartelstien would not divulge the interested teams, but an NBA source said that the Hornets seem to be Boston's main competition. The Celtics seem willing to give Posey the full $5.5 mid-level exception, but it seems doubtful that it will be offered more than two years. The 31-year-old seems interested in getting a four-year deal. Other teams potentially interested in Posey include Detroit, Washington and Cleveland.

And finally, while there were rumblings that mercurial point guard Stephon's Marbury previous relationship with Kevin Garnett might land him in a Celtics uniform, there now is apparently no need for concern (sports.espn.go.com):

Conventional wisdom is that the Sixers and Wizards have fared the best so far this offseason. And sure, signing Elton Brand or re-signing Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison is great. But sometimes the best deal is the one you don't make. Or can't make.

The quite available Stephon Marbury appeared in Las Vegas on Friday with a new tattoo. A tattoo on his face. A tattoo on his face of the No. 3 -- the uniform number he has worn for his entire career and the inspiration for the logo of his Starbury line of shoes.

That means that no matter what happens between now and October, the Celtics and Nets have locked in the best offseason. They are the only two teams who have retired the No. 3 -- for Dennis Johnson and Drazen Petrovic, respectively. So there is no possible way they can ever trade for Stephon Marbury.

... but hindsight does not cast him in a favorable light if you peruse this morning's edition of the Globe (boston.com):

It was one year ago on draft night that Ainge had us all scratching our heads when he traded the No. 5 pick for Ray Allen. At that hour, Ainge was Danny the Doofus, harpooned from baseline to baseline. We wondered why the Celtics were getting older. We wondered about Allen's double ankle surgery.

Ainge came away with Glen "Big Baby" Davis in the second round and said, "He has big upside."

Yeah, we snickered. Big backside, too.

I ripped Ainge and the owners for lying about holding onto the pick, then wrote, "If they don't get Garnett, if this really is it . . . the Celtics look ridiculous."

I also questioned the team for accommodating Paul Pierce, comparing the Celtics to Tom Yawkey's Country Club Red Sox.

Bob Cousy was no fan of the Ainge plan that night. The Cooz said, "I don't have that kind of confidence in aging free agents, especially guys like Garnett or Allen who haven't won anything. I would rather have seen them continue with the youth movement and take the kid from China [Yi Jianlian]."

Yikes ... Would it be safe to assume that Mr. Cousy wishes he could rethink taking that stance?

Okay, I just woke up (as you can imagine, it was pretty tough to get to bed last night), so I'll make this brief and somewhat coherent ...

I've been doing this online thing for about a dozen years now; I started up a rinky-dink little website dedicated to the team back when ML Carr was spouting off about leading a "championship-driven" ballclub. I've seen just about the worst this ballclub has had to offer in its storied history ... I would dream about the Celtics rising once again to the top of the mountain, hope for it, yearn for it.

Now that it's here, it's pretty much as good as I was hoping it would be.

Time to celebrate, Celtics fans, it's been a long time coming ... plus, it's time to prepare for the Drive to 18 (somebody better pounce on that URL right quick before I do)!
